Ryan's Review: Dating Rules From My Future Self Season 1

Dating Rules From My Future Self Season 1 Review by Ryan Heckathorne

Dating Rules From My Future Self is a web series that debuted earlier this year. The show’s premise is that the main character, Lucy, an app developer, starts to receive text messages from herself ten years in the future which give her romantic advice. The show has high production values, which is not surprising, given the show’s network pedigree.  Sallie Patrick, who has worked on shows like Revenge and Life Unexpected, wrote the first season. The production company behind the series is Alloy Entertainment, which makes Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries. The show also has several sponsors, including Biore, Revlon and Schick, which provide the occasional relatively unobtrusive product placement. The first season consists of nine episodes, which range in length from six minutes to ten minutes.

Shiri Appleby brings a genuine sweetness and vulnerability to the role of Lucy, which causes you to empathize with the character. She’s a big name to be starring in a web series, and the show is all the better for her starring in it. Appleby is best known for starring in the TV show Roswell, and more recently for playing one of the leads on the CW’s Life Unexpected. Most of the supporting cast acquits themselves satisfactorily, with a particularly nice turn by Martin Starr (of Freaks and Geeks and Adventureland fame) as one of Lucy’s coworkers.

The storyline of the first season does not reinvent the genre of romantic comedy. You see the character of Lucy learn to stand up for herself and go after what she wants. But, thanks to a clever conceit and a winning performance by Appleby, the first season is an enjoyable watch.

The series will be continuing with a second season, albeit with a new lead character.  The show will retain the same premise, but will star Candice Accola from The Vampire Diaries as Chloe Cunningham. The second season premieres August 2, 2012.
